CONJUNCTIONS - When / While

WHILE
1) When an event takes place during the continuation of another.
Example:
Joan visited her brother while she was travelling round the world.
The visit happened during the world trip and the focus is on the visit to her brother. You put while at the beginning of the sentence which shows the longer event.

2) For two events happening at the same time.
Example:
Robin was listening to the radio while he was driving along the motorway.
Here, while can go at the beginning of either part of the sentence, but usually you put it at the beginning of the main event.

3) While is usually followed by a verb in a continuous form.
Examples:
While I was crossing the road… / While she is visiting her friend…

4) When we use while, the event is still continuing.
Example:
While he was driving along the motorway … (This is an unfinished event in the past).
Note: Put a comma between the two clauses only when the while-clause is first.




WHEN
1) We use when to show one vent has interrupted another.
Example:
Robin was driving along the motorway, when the accident happened.

2) When can only be used at the beginning of the part of the sentence which shows the interruption.

3) When we use when, the verb is usually in a simple tense.
Examples:
When the accident occurred … / When I go to France
Note: Put a comma between the two clauses only when the when-clause is first.



TENSES WITH WHEN / WHILE
1) You can use an imperative clause after a when-or-while clause.
Examples:
When you are preparing the meal, watch the TV news. / When you see John, tell him to come early.

2) When these conjunctions are used for future events, the verb after when / while is usually in the present tense.
Examples:
David will meet Mary when he finishes his work. / David will have lunch while he is finishing his work.

3) You can also use the present perfect with them.
Example:
David will meet Mary when he has finished his work


Exercise:
Match the parts of these sentences:

1) While they were playing tennis,
a) stay at the entrance.
2) While I was walking in the park,
b) go and visit the Museum.
3) When she goes home at night,
c) you will be able to see the musicians.
4) While she is watching TV,
d) I saw I wild dog.
5) When John saw the wild dog,
e) telephone for a taxi.
6) While you are staying in Krakow,
f) he wanted to tell his wife.
7) When you arrive at the station,
g) it started to rain.
8) While you are waiting for the taxi,
h) I was having lunch.
9) When he heard the news,
i) her husband cooks the dinner.
10) While you are in London,
j) she always watches TV.
11) When I saw you,
k) he hid behind a tree.
