Intermediário 5. CONJUNCTIONS - before / after

BEFORE
Look at these sentences:
-   Joan visited her brother before she went on a world trip.
-   Before she went on a world trip, Joan visited her brother.

First event: visit her brother
Second event: world trip

Here the first event is more important.
Note: Put a comma between the two clauses when the before-clause is the first.

AFTER
Look at these sentences:
-   After she visited her brother, she went on a world trip.
-   She went on a world trip after she visited her brother.

First event: visit her brother
Second event: world trip

Here the second event is more important.

Note: put a comma between the two clauses when the after-clause is the first.

Notes:
1) When before is used for future events, the verb is usually in the present tense in the part of the sentence after the conjunction. Before David meets Mary, he will finish his work.
2) When after is used for future events, we usually use the present perfect in the part of the sentence after the conjunction. David will meet Mary after he has finished his work.

Exercises:
Complete the dialogue with BEFORE or AFTER:
J: When will you come to see me?

T: (1) … I go on holiday. Then I can tell you my plans.

J: But it will have to be (2) … I've come back from Paris. When you go on holiday?

T: In about three weeks. That will be (3) … I go to the football championship. I can't miss that.

J: I used to go to football matches. But that was (4) … I met Richard. He doesn't like football.

T: That's a pity. I always enjoy the fun (5) … your team wins the game.

J: What if your team looses? Anyway, will you see me first, (6) … you go to the football championship or later (7) … you've lost the game?

T: We won't loose. The last time we lost was (8) … the captain was injured.

J: That was last year! You could say the last time you won was (9) … the captain was injured.

T: I'll come and see you (10) … I see the match. Then we won't know the result and so we can't quarrel about it.
